OSYAN is an independent Irish non-profit organisation committed to advancing human rights, promoting education, supporting community integration, and fostering equality and inclusion.
Established as a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG), OSYAN works for the public benefit through research, education, advocacy, and community engagement. Our work is guided by the principles of human dignity, equality, justice, accountability, and respect for diversity.
Although our work has a particular focus on Afghanistan and Afghan communities in Ireland, the values that guide OSYAN are universal. We believe that every individual, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or social background, is entitled to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights, and participate fully in society.
We collaborate with communities, academic institutions, civil society organisations, public bodies, and international partners to promote evidence-based solutions to human rights challenges and strengthen inclusive communities.
The name OSYAN comes from Persian. It signifies rebellion, resistance, and the refusal to submit to injustice. It represents the courage to challenge oppression, discrimination, and inequality—not through violence, but through knowledge, advocacy, solidarity, and peaceful action.
The inspiration for OSYAN came from the extraordinary resilience of women and girls in Afghanistan. Despite severe restrictions on their rights, education, employment, and participation in public life, countless women continue to demonstrate remarkable courage in defending their dignity and demanding equality.
OSYAN was founded in recognition of that spirit.
